Kneecap Member Faces UK Terror Charge Amid Controversy

LONDON, May 21, 2025 — Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, better known as Mo Chara, a member of the Belfast-based rap group Kneecap, has been officially charged by UK authorities with a terrorism-related offense. The charge stems from an alleged incident during a November 2024 performance at London’s Kentish Town Forum, where Mo Chara is accused of displaying a Hezbollah flag on stage.
According to the Metropolitan Police, the 27-year-old artist is being charged under the Terrorism Act, specifically for showing support for a banned organization. Mo Chara is expected to appear in court on June 18. Authorities used the anglicized spelling of his name, Liam O’Hanna, in official documents.
This follows earlier reports that the group was under investigation after videos surfaced online. The clips allegedly show Kneecap members chanting phrases interpreted as supporting Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as making incendiary political remarks.
In response, Kneecap released a statement denying support for any proscribed groups, calling the situation a “manufactured moral panic.” They claim their words were taken out of context by “establishment figures” looking to stir controversy.
More Than Music: Kneecap’s Cultural Impact
Kneecap—comprised of Mo Chara, DJ Provaí, and Naoise Ó Cairealláin—has garnered both praise and criticism for its unapologetically political lyrics and frequent use of the Irish language. Their music challenges British colonial history, addresses working-class struggles, and often satirizes sectarian divisions that still persist in Northern Ireland.
While critics have labeled some of their performances provocative, supporters argue the group is using hip-hop as a tool for cultural revival and resistance, spotlighting the marginalized Irish-speaking community in a politically divided region.
As the legal case unfolds, the music world watches closely. The outcome could have broader implications—not just for free speech in the UK, but also for politically engaged artists who walk the line between protest and provocation.
